China as an emerging migration destination: theories, policies and trends

Call for papers

In the rapidly changing global order of the early 21st century, the emergence of China as a destination for international migrants is an important new reality. The Chinese government’s ambitious One Belt One Road initiative has brought China into ever closer economic, social and political contact with other nations across Asia and Europe. At the same time, China’s rapidly developing metropolitan centres have become popular destinations for business and trade, while China’s universities are actively competing to attract international students and scholars. This growing importance of China as an immigration destination is reflected in recent policy initiatives, such as the creation of the State Immigration Administration, which is meant to streamline administrative procedures for immigrants.

The objective of this conference is to examine the social, cultural and political dimensions of China’s emergence as a destination for significant international migration flows. While Chinese overseas migration has been extensively documented through social and historical research, the country’s rising role as a host for diverse groups of cross-border migrants remains under-explored. More broadly, these new trends point to the need to look beyond long established theses about South-to-North migration. In response, this conference seeks to bring together scholars working in this new field of research, to discuss common themes, innovative theoretical perspectives and future research agendas.

This conference will take place at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai on December 1-2, 2018. It is organised by the university’s Department of Sociology and the Centre for International Development Comparative Studies. Thematic areas include, but are not limited to:

· Economic migration and networks in China

·China as a study abroad destination

·Gender and transnational intimate relationships

·Theoretical perspectives on transnaitonalism, cosmopolitanism and mobility

·Migration policy and the governance of cross-border migration flow

·Integration, marginalization and conflict in China as a host country

We invite applications for twenty-minute papers. Following the conference, we will consider publishing selected papers in a special issue with renowned journal.

To participate, please submit an abstract of 200 words by the following three contact email address. Please make sure to include your name, institutional affiliation, and contact details. For further inquiries and to submit your abstract, please write to the conference organisers:
